Google was initially called “Backrub” because it analyzed “back links” to understand how important a website was.
According to an article from Business Insider, the Google name came from a graduate student at Stanford named Sean Anderson.
Google is a play off the word “googol”, which is the digit 1 followed by 100 zeroes. This name conveys the vast amount of data the company works with.
